A Look Back at This Session #MDGA19
I ran into a man I did not know, but who recognized me in the elevator yesterday who asked me, “what do you think of Annapolis after your first session?". After I told him, he said, “people need to hear that”. He inspired this post.
It was a great experience to be a legislator in Annapolis.
Not knowing what to expect I was, overall, very impressed with the process and system of passing legislation. The legislators from across the state bring varied relevant and rich experience, and are knowledgeable, hardworking and passionate about good public policy. Members treat each other with tremendous respect. Watching a floor “fight” is a good lesson in civil discourse. I recommend any public body struggling with dysfunction listen to some of those recordings.
It’s very difficult to get legislation passed, but that is the way it should be. There are many checks and balances along the way. It’s a system that has been fine tuned over more than 450 sessions and you feel that history every day that you walk into the House Chamber. Yet, it’s constantly evolving to meet current and future expectations and challenges.
